The Smilers set of stamps were introduced to encourage and support social mail. The earlier issues were called Greetings stamps, and were issued as commemorative sets of six. They were designed to be sold in booklets at supermarkets and greetings card outlets rather than through traditional stamp distribution at the Post Office counters.
This Happy Families Miniature Sheet Cover - BC517M features eight Smilers stamps from the 2015 issue set upon a background of the original cards set from the Happy Families game and cancelled with a Motherwell, Strathclyde postmark dated 20th January 2015. The game was devised by John Jaques II, who is also credited with inventing tiddlywinks, ludo and snakes and ladders. The first set of cards was published before the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Released 20th January 2015
